Writing Your Dating Profile
When it comes to writing your own online dating profile there's a little mental trick that can make all the difference. It is learning how to see your dating profile from the point of view of another person. If you can learn how to do this you will be able to much more clearly see the impression your profile is giving to other members of the online personals.
If you browse the dating profiles you will see photos, headers and descriptions written by other singles that grab your attention, and others that barely make any impression on you at all. Sometimes those that do get your attention do so for the wrong reasons, so you would not want to emulate their approach. |
Of those that appeal to you for the right reasons, no doubt the photo used is the first attention-grabber you notice. However, the header and description have to work with the photo to create an appealing impression of the single in the personal ad. A good photo accompanying a description that then puts off other singles is no use at all.
Now the trick is to detach yourself from your own dating profile so that you can see _your_ profile in the same way that you see the other profiles. You have to almost pretend to be someone else, not actually looking at your own profile as if it is yours, but as if it is one you've just found in the personals. If you can develop this approach you will get a much clearer idea of how effective your dating profile is likely to be at attracting other singles to click on it.
In fact, this is an approach you can apply to many things, whenever you are doing a piece of writing (such as a letter or email) intended for other people.
Of course once you see the flaws in your profile you will need to edit it until you have improved it to a point you are satisfied with. Even then, come back to it the next day with fresh eyes and edit it again if necessary.
So, is it easy to learn this ability to see your online dating profile from other singles' points of view? Some will find it easier than others do. It's a question of practice and putting yourself into the right frame of mind. It's useful to pretend to yourself that your profile is new to you and ask the crucial question: 'How does it make me feel?' Think about whether the profile writer is someone you would actually like to meet through the personals -- basing this solely on the profile itself.
This approach needs a lot of practice, but is worth learning if you are to get the best out of using the online dating personals. |
